As we celebrate our 25th anniversary of Oasis Tutoring in the St. Louis region, we're working to hit a milestone goal. We are looking to sign up 2,500 tutors
by September 30 to work in St. Louis area schools as part of our Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring program.
Our tutors truly make a difference. The US Department of Education stated that one-on-one tutoring is the most effective way to help a child in need of academic intervention. Our tutors work with children in K-3 and serve as their tutors, mentors and friends - helping them develop reading skills that are simply critical to their overall academic success.
From Kindergarten to grade 3, students are learning how to read, but from grade 3 forward, students are reading to learn. Studies show that students who haven't found confidence and personal mastery in reading by grade 4 are significantly less likely to graduate high school.
Through the Intergenerational Tutoring program, last year more than 5,000 volunteers helped over 16,000 children in 815 schools become more confident readers. And the teachers reported academic progress for 90 percent of these children. In fact, in 2012, principals were so happy with our work that they requested more than 1,000 additional tutors to work with their students.
We believe that one tutor for one school year can forever impact one life.
We train our volunteer tutors so that they can be that critical support for the children who they work with. Tutors can work with one child or several, on a one-on-one basis throughout the school year. Opportunities are available throughout the St. Louis region for volunteers.
If you've tutored before, you've made a difference - and we ask you to invite a friend to experience Oasis tutoring with you this year. If you've never had the opportunity but are interested, please sign up today by clicking here.
Thank you for your continued support of Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring!
