Anthem Foundation and Oasis have partnered in the fight against obesity

Children and adults in 21 U.S. cities have made healthy changes to eat better and move more as a result of Oasis CATCH Healthy Habits, a program made possible with generous support of Anthem Foundation.

The innovative, evidence-based program engages volunteers as role models to teach healthy lifelong habits to children in grades K-5 from predominantly low-income neighborhoods. Each one-hour session includes a hands-on nutrition lesson, a healthy snack, and 30 minutes of fun, high energy games that get kids and adults moving and laughing together.

Leon Harris and Robin Gould stopped by the Rollingcrest-Chillum community Center in Hyattsville to visit with kids and volunteers who are learning about healthy eating and active living. “They just infuse you with laughter and energy,” says Cecilia Dade-Winfield of her experience working with the children.

Program Results

Both adult volunteers and child participants benefit from the program. In addition to significantly increasing their levels of physical activity both during and outside the program, both groups report that they eat more vegetables, are more likely to read nutrition labels, and are more aware of foods they should eat less frequently.

Since 2008, Anthem Foundation has invested $6.4 million to establish and expand this intergenerational program designed to stem obesity across the generations, an issue that continues to have serious long-term health implications. In the United States, 35% of people age 50+ lead sedentary lifestyles and obesity rates have more than tripled in the last three decades among children ages 6 – 11.

A national model, Oasis Catch Healthy Habits has proven so successful that Anthem was named a finalist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Corporate Citizenship Award for Best Health and Wellness Program.

With support from Anthem, Oasis CATCH Healthy Habits has grown by more than 1000% since inception. Today, more than 16,000 children and 2,700 adult volunteers in 21 cities across 17 states have participated in the program. Starting in Fall 2014, thousands more adults 50+ will benefit from the CATCH approach by participating in wellness classes that provide proven strategies to becoming more active and eating healthier.
